Holy grail of the same people who dislike New Adventures He-Man.
Series: Masters of the Universe Origins
Year: 2026

Prelude: One of the most sought-after figures from the original Masters of the Universe line has finally arrived in Origins. New Adventures He-Man is… oops, sorry, it’s Laser Power He-Man, of course. Pay no attention to the similar design of the two figures. So here we have Laser Power He-Man, the swan song of the original MotU line, now out in Origins. Let’s say go!

Figure Review: Now at the heart of things, Laser Power He-Man is just another He-Man figure. Big, muscular guy in underoos, bad haircut (though not nearly as bad as the original one), and big sword in hand. He has traded in his mostly reddish-brown and grey colors for blue and silver, though, including boots that look a bit like they were made for walking on the moon, and silver gloves to go with his silver wrist bands. He also wears a blue chest-harness, a blue armguard on his right arm, and a big blue rucksack. It’s got the standard articulation of an Origins figure, meaning quite good.

The main selling point of Laser Power He-Man is, of course, that he has a light-up sword. The sword is actually the biggest deviation from your standard He-Man figure, as it looks nothing like the traditional Power Sword and much more like the sword carried by New Adventures He-Man. It’s connected to the backpack with a yellow wire and the button for making it light-up is on top of said backpack. The bulkiness of the backpack is mostly to duplicate the original figure’s look, I believe, as the electronics were much bigger back in the 80s than they need to be today.

Bottom line: it’s a He-Man wearing blue with a light-up sword. Now if you are old enough to remember the original Laser Power He-Man and were kind of hoping to one day possess this ultra-rare figure, that is more than enough. If you’re not, well, than it’s just a He-Man wearing blue with a light-up sword, full stop.

Remarks: In 1988 the Masters of the Universe line was pretty much over. What had once been a franchise juggernaut generating massive sales the world over had faded out within a relatively short amount of time. In Europe, however, two final figures were released under the original MotU banner. Laser Power He-Man and Skeletor. These days those two are among the most valuable and sought after figures in the aftermarket.

Of course, just one year later the New Adventures of He-Man line would launch with the initial He-Man and Skeletor figures from that line showing a strong resemblance to the Laser Power figures. Sure, the basic figure aesthetic is different, but still, the design has clearly leaped the gap into the new series.

The figure heavily draws on the nostalgia of that rare original figure (like most Origin figures do) and for me, that is quite enough. If you have no connection to it, though, then it’s really just another He-Man figure with a slightly out-of-the-ordinary sword, little more.
