Series: Masters of the Universe Origins
Subline: Cartoon Collection (200X)
Year: 2026
Prelude: Okay, pay attention: it’s Zodak! Not Zodac, Zodak! Zodac is the guy from the vintage toyline and Filmation cartoon who flew around on a golden throne. Zodak, however, is the guy from the 2002 cartoon and toyline with the glowing tattoos and major grudge against Snake-Men. Got it? Good, because Mattel doesn’t and named this figure here Zodac, despite it clearly being Zodak! Is that so difficult, Mattel? It’s Zodak, so let’s say go!
Review: Fair warning, Zodac / Zodak is one of my all-time favorite MotU characters, so this review might just be a tiny bit biased.
Despite having a ‘c’ in the name, this figure here clearly depicts the character Zodak as we saw him in the 2002 cartoon series. He’s got the familiar helmet and chest plate, but also has the loincloth, booths, white gloves, and the tattoos covering his arms, torso, and thighs. Instead of the handgun vintage Zodac carried, this Zodak here carries the staff we saw him wield in the cartoon, which is a handy weapon and can open and close dimensional portals, too.
Articulation is standard for the Origins line, meaning pretty good. The loin cloth does hinder the leg movement a tiny bit, but not much. Head and limbs are swappable with other Origin figures, of course. The chest harness can be removed, though there are no further tattoos to be found underneath it. Apparently Zodak’s tattoo artist was told not to bother continuing the patterns where the chest harness would be. The loincloth and white belt can also be removed, revealing vintage Zodac’s furry grey pants underneath, if that is more your thing.
The one thing I would have liked to see here is a removable helmet (or a second head with no helmet, I’m not picky), seeing as 2002 Zodak was the only version of the character who removed his helmet now and then. The 2002 figure had a removable helmet, but sadly not the Origins figure. Maybe we’ll get a non-helmeted head for this figure at some point, either officially or from a third party company.
Bottom line: it’s Zodak (or Zodac, whatever) from the 2002 cartoon, now reincarnated in the Origins line. Very nice apart from the non-removeable helmet.
Remarks: In the 2002 Masters of the Universe cartoon, the Cosmic Enforcer Zodak (mind the ‘k’) was the one who originally imprisoned the Snake-Men in the void thousands of years ago. Seeking revenge against King Hsss for killing his brother, however, Zodak allowed Evil-Lyn and Kobra Khan to free the Snake-Men. He eventually did get his revenge, killing King Hsss in one-on-one combat, but only after the Snake-Men caused all sorts of havoc on Eternia.
I am not sure why the 2002 series went with Zodak instead of Zodac like in the vintage line, but the Classics line eventually established the two of them as separate characters, both of them members of an entire corps of Cosmic Enforcers. It’s only now with the Origins Cartoon Collection, that Mattel decided to spell this guy’s name here with a ‘c’, too. Why? Couldn’t tell you, sorry. We’ll see if the Zodak name ever makes an appearance again.
Naming issues aside, the Origins 2002 Zodac is a very good toy version of the character we saw in the cartoon. That he cannot remove his helmet is really the only bad thing I can say about him. No complaints otherwise. If you want a toy version of 2002 Zodac and skipped the Classics version, then this guy here is your man.
