Series: New Adventures of He-Man
Year: 1989
Review: The New Adventures line and cartoon really had just three things in common with the previous Masters of the Universe franchise: He-Man, a magic sword, and Skeletor, of course. A far slimmer and more cyborg-looking Skeletor than any previous incarnation. New Adventures Skeletor is a standard late 80s / early 90s action figure with a gimmick where you turn the waist to have Skeletor raise his arms (with his staff) to strike out at enemies. He can take off his helmet, too, as well as the cape.
In the New Adventures cartoon Skeletor simply sported this new look without any explanation, but in the mini-comics accompanying the toys, we did get one. Skeletor was near-lethally wounded in a failed attempt to steal the Power of Grayskull on board the Eternia space ship. He escaped through a laser gate into the future and used cybernetic parts to heal himself. Another difference: in the cartoon Skeletor pretended to be second-in-command to Mutant leader Flogg for most of the series. In the comics, however, Skeletor quickly overpowered and humbled Flogg, taking command of the Mutants from him.
This figure here is a nice example of an action figure from that time and does work better as a Skeletor than the He-Man figure worked as a He-Man, in my opinion. Like always, it's best to imagine this series and its toys as a stand-alone thing, not as a sequel to the Masters of the Universe.
