Series: New Adventures of He-Man
Year: 1989
Review: In 1989 Mattel attempted to revive the Masters of the Universe franchise with a sequel series called "The New Adventures of He-Man". Pretty much everything was changed from the previous series, right down to the basic design of the figures. New Adventures He-Man looks more like a generic late 80s / early 90s action figure, not like the powerful, always slightly squatting MotU figures people remembered from their childhood. Add that the new series was in a completely different setting, the only thing connecting it to the old one were some names and that a magic sword was involved.
The first of several He-Man figures in the New Adventures line is, as mentioned above, a pretty basic action figure with a punching / sword slashing action in one arm. He carries a very different looking power sword and comes with a helmet and a two-part torso armor. Articulation is pretty good for the time, better than that of the original figures, but still: it really doesn't look like a He-Man to me. Personally I'm a big fan of the New Adventures series, but only as a stand-alone series that just happens to feature a guy called He-Man, not as a sequel to either the original cartoon or toy line.
