The gale force winds of New Eternia blast across the decimated planet, with the storm's herald, Sy-Klone, at its helm!
Prelude: The Masters of the Universe franchise encompasses everything from fantasy to science fiction to superheroes and somehow Sy-Klone reflects all of that. He was a cyborg, a magical Samurai warrior, and he dressed like a Power Ranger while featuring the powers of DC superhero Red Tornado. The Masterverse New Eternia line releases a figure trying to unite all these different aspects into one. Let’s say go!
Review: New Eternia Sy-Klone goes for a mixture of the previous looks of Sy-Klone across the various toy lines. He’s not quite as Samurai-themed as the 200X version, but not as generically superhero-like as the original 1985 toy, either. He could presumably star in one of those Power Ranger Samurai-themed series, I guess. Predominantly blue and yellow with red accents, he is certainly a colorful fellow.
Wearing a full-body armor, the only part where you can Sy-Klone’s skin is his face. He’s blue, reflecting his (possible) Gar heritage, with black lines drawn onto his face. He also comes with a red face mask you can click into the helmet, thus covering him up completely. On his chest you see the same radar screen / space map the original figure sported.
As a Masterverse figure Sy-Klone foregoes the spinning gimmick the original figure had, but his articulation is excellent, so you can spin his upper body, entire torso, boots or hands, too, if you want. He features double knee and double elbow joints, making him very bendable, and he also comes with two different pairs of hands, two closed fists and two open hands for holding weapons.
Speaking of weapons, Sy-Klone carries a translucent yellow shield and comes with two fire effects, which he can either attach to the shield or his forearms. This makes for a lot of cool poses where you can imagine his shield or his arms spin so fast that they ignite the air. Very nice. The shield can be stored on his back and you can have the flame effects on top of his shoulders that way, which makes for another cool visual.
Overall I really love this figure. Sy-Klone looks awesome, manages to unite all the rather divergent genre of the Masters franchise, and he’d work well enough with your Marvel Legends or other similar-sized superhero figures, too, I believe. So bottom line: awesome figure! Well worth getting.
Remarks: The original Sy-Klone toy came out in 1985 when the Filmation series was already drawing to a close, so he only had two very short appearances there. He featured more prominently in comics, where he was portrayed as a cyborg warrior and had an impressive showing against legions of Horde troopers. His most prominent appearance yet was in the 2002 Masters cartoon, where he was reimagined as a magical, somewhat Samurai-influenced warrior who protected the mythical island of Anwat-Gar. With Skeletor being described as a descendant of the Gar race and both characters having blue skin, fans quickly began to theorize as to a possible connection between the two. To my knowledge only the Masters comics by DC actually went into that, by showing the Gar (including one dressed similarly to Sy-Klone) as allies of King Grayskull, who betrayed him after the Horde was defeated, with both Keldor/Skeletor and Sy-Klone being descendants of that race with no further relation.
As mentioned above, Sy-Klone is an awesome figure, both as a Masters of the Universe character or just as a generic superhero (or villain, too) for use with whatever similar-sized figures you happen to collect. Fully recommended.
