Series: Masters of the Universe X Transformers

Prelude: It took more than 40 years, but finally my two favorite toy franchises are crossing over… sort of. The Masters of the Universe meet the Transformers, or at least the Masters of the Universe redesigned some of their armors to look like Transformers. Still, it’s a MotU X Transformers crossover, that’s good enough for me. Let’s say go!
This review is dedicated to Peter Cullen, the original voice of Optimus Prime, who passed away last week at the age of 85. A great voice is no longer with us, but we shall do our best to remain true to his famous quote: be strong enough to be kind. Good journey, Peter.
Review: The Masters of the Universe X Transformers crossover brings us Masters figures – He-Man in this case – who are wearing armor and weapons looking similar to the Transformers – Optimus Prime in this case. So it’s Optimus Armor He-Man we are looking at here, and he is a He-Man who... well, wears Optimus armor. The name fits very well.
He-Man is wearing blue boots, grey pants, red chest armor with a grill for his abs, and shoulder pads with smoke stacks on them. He also wears red gauntlets with blue gloves and an Optimus Prime styled headgear with a removable mouth guard, too. The figure itself is Origin-scaled and has the appropriate amount of joints and posing ability, so he can pull off all sorts of moves.
In terms of weapons he has a redesigned Power Sword with the Matrix of Leadership forming the hilt, somewhat looking like a slightly more elaborate Star Saber. He also carries a transparent blue shield and also comes with Optimus Prime’s trademark Energon Axe. The axe slots into his wrist if you remove one of the hands (hopefully that’s just magic, not really an amputation for He-Man).
Overall I like this figure a lot, the only thing that’s a bit off-putting is that most of the armor pieces are non-removable. The only thing He-Man can take off is the chest harness, and only if you remove both arms and the head. Also, he has a bit of trouble holding the shield solidly. Apart from that, though, a very nice He-Man figure. Sure, he looks more like He-Man cosplaying as Optimus Prime instead of a proper crossover (Optimus would have made a good Attack Track, I think), but still: nice.
Remarks: Despite being two of the most successful 80s toy franchises of them all, there has never been an official crossover between Masters of the Universe and Transformers before now. Personally, I’d have preferred it to be more like the GI Joe Crossover, with the Transformers converting into classic MotU vehicles like the Battle Ram or the Wind Rider. Instead, we get MotU figures wearing Transformers-themed armor and weapons.
I passed on these figures until they were on clearance, as I considered nearly 40 euros a bit too steep a price for what’s basically just another He-Man figure. That said, it’s a pretty nice He-Man figure and the Optimus Prime themed armor looks good on him. Sure, it’s mostly the nostalgia value of seeing two of my favorite franchises finally united, but still. If you are a fan like me and can get He-Man on clearance, he’s worth getting. I’d never have paid full price for him, though.
