Prelude: I know, I always say that I don’t get the point of Transformers that don’t transform, yet more and more Blokees figures seem to find their way into my collection. Well… okay, this one here’s Optimus Prime and at the end of the Marvel Comics Optimus became an Action Master who couldn’t transform, so… canon! Right? Anyway, here is Blokees Galaxy Version Optimus Prime from the very first wave in 2023. So let’s roll out!
Review: Blokees Galaxy Version Optimus Prime is a model kit, so he comes in pieces that need to be assembled first. It’s a pretty easy assembly, though, no high-end model kit skills required. The basic frame is more or less the same as most other Galaxy Version figures, but the various other parts clearly identify him as Optimus Prime. He’s got the grill abs, he’s got the chest windows, he’s got the smoke stack shoulders. The head, too, is a good depiction of (cartoon) Optimus Prime. So no doubt about it, this here is Optimus Prime.
The articulation is as good as you expect from a Blokees figure, meaning very good. He has ball-jointed feet and shoulders, can twist in the hip, can turn and nod his head, the works. To support the more outlandish poses, he also comes with a stand where you can plug in his feet. Like most Blokees figures he comes with several different pairs of hands, so you have fists for holding the weapons, one with a pointy finger, and jazz hands. For weapons, he comes with his trusty rifle and also the orange Energon Axe, which he can plug into either wrist instead of a hand.
So bottom line: it’s Optimus Prime. Looking good, very nicely articulated, with all the standard weapons. No transformation ability, naturally, but you knew that coming in. A very nice figure.
Remarks: What can I say about Optimus Prime as a character that hasn’t already been said? Especially since we’ve recently lost Peter Cullen, his original voice actor. He was the robo-dad in the 1980s, the heroic superhero in red and blue, willing to protect us all from tyranny and subjugation. Come to think of it, we could certainly use such a robot hero these days, couldn’t we? Anyway, Optimus Prime is an icon, no doubt, so it was a given that Blokees would include him in their first wave of Galaxy version figures.
I don’t exactly know why Blokees appeal to me despite my firm stance against non-transforming Transformers figures. Also, I’m really not a big model kit fan, either. Maybe it’s simply because these figures are easy to assemble, fun to play with, and you get a lot for a pretty low price, all things considered. So while I will probably never become a Blokees completist or anything, I am sure more Blokees figures will find their way into my possession.
