Series: Masters of the Universe
Year: 1982
The original concept for the Masters of the Universe line of toys reads like a fever dream. A muscle-bound hero who can be anything, be it fantasy, science fiction, military, whatever. Set in a post-apocalyptic world with a curious mixture of magic and technology (which might or might not be one and the same), complete with demons from other dimensions, spirits, goddesses, and fish men. And somehow, this concept turned into a highly successful toy line with a main character who has long surpassed his original roots as a mere copy of Conan the Barbarian.
The original He-Man toy is a classic for a reason. The look is iconic, the accessories simple but fitting (chest harness, sword, battle ax, shield), and while articulation wasn't great, it was fully sufficient for a boy's toy from the 1980s. He-Man remains one of the most recognizable toys of the 20th century and the current resurgence in popularity speaks for itself. He-Man will always have the power!
