Seafood never looked so good!
Series: Masters of the Universe Masterverse - New Eternia
Year: 2024

With New Eternia shattered into thousands of islands, Mer-Man terrorizes everyone foolish enough to travel the oceans in search of Castle Grayskull.

Prelude: I may have mentioned it before, but it bears repeating. Mer-Man was my very first Masters of the Universe figure way back in 1982, so every time a new version comes out, I am somewhat prone to getting it. That does not change with the Masterverse New Eternia version of the fish man. Have I mentioned that I’m Pisces, too? So, let’s go fish!

Figure: The first thing I thought when I held this figure here in hand was: Mer-Man is GORGEOUS! This has got to be one of the most statue-like action figures I’ve ever seen. The level of detail is astounding, especially on his chest armor and weapons. There are beads hanging from his belt, a medallion on his chest, and lots more details to discover. The detail work on his head is also pretty amazing (those eyes!!!) and harkens back to Mer-Man’s original design from the mini-comics that came with the first vintage figures. Have I mentioned he looks gorgeous? He actually looks better than the early prototype and promo pictures I saw of this figure, which isn’t often the case.

Mer-Man adheres to the high standard of articulation that most Masterverse figures have, so no complaints here. He comes with two exchangeable hands, one set for holding his weapons, one set with open hands that display the webbing between the fingers. He also comes with two weapons, his familiar corral sword and a spear (not a trident this time), both of which are as nicely sculpted as the figure itself. The sword can be attached to the back of his chest armor, which is removeable, of course.

So bottom line for this figure: damn, he’s gorgeous! And a cool action figure on top of that, too.

Remarks: We don’t really have a proper backstory for the New Eternia line, just a number of short profile texts on the backs of the packages. The US packages, to be precise, as the European ones leave them out. It seems that some sort of catastrophe befell Eternia, which shattered the continents into thousands of small islands. Castle Grayskull is on one of them presumably, and various people seem to be looking for it. We’ll see if more story is forthcoming.

Being one of Skeletor’s most well-known henchmen, there have been a lot of Mer-Man figures over the years. Of all those I’ve personally seen, this one here is easily the best. A great figure of a favorite character of mine. Recommended to all MotU Fans unless you really don’t like Mer-Man.
