Can build anything, as long as it's cat-themed!
Series: Masters of the Universe X Thundercats
Year: 2025

Prelude: Today we are looking at Panthro from Thundercats, not to be confused with Panthor from Masters of the Universe, even though this is a Masters of the Universe X Thundercats crossover. There is a Panthor, too, but that’s a different figure. This is Panthro, the Man-at-Arms of Thundercats. So ready your cat-themed weapons and let’s say hoooooooo!

Review: Now unlike Skell-Ra, who is a composite figure of Skeletor and Mumm-Ra, Panthro is just Panthro from Thundercats, no character mix-ups here. Sure, he comes with some armor pieces that distinctly remind one of Man-at-Arms of MotU fame, but they are just accessories. The main figure itself is just Panthro, full stop. Now technically this line is in the same scale as the Origins figures, but Panthro is a head taller than your average Origins figure. Well, he was portrayed as a pretty big guy in the cartoon, so I guess that’s okay. He is a head too short to fit in with the Masterverse stuff, after all.

Straight out of the packaging Panthro is dressed in what I liked to called MotU bling. He carries a chest harness with Man-at-Arms’ familiar mouthguard, has a big metal belt with a loincloth, a golden gauntlet that can mount either a morning star or a big axe, and he also comes with a golden mask and golden shin- and arm guards. He also wears the familiar MotU furry boots.

Now you can remove all that bling, including replacing the shin parts with non-furry boots, give him a different chest harness and belt, and you have Panthro, looking almost as if he’d jumped right out of the old 1980s cartoon. In this “mode” he carries his familiar paw-themed Nunchaku, which he can wield two-handed and in all sorts of poses.

No matter whether you prefer the MotU bling version or the pure 1980s Thundercats version, Panthro is a very cool figure, very nicely articulated, and just looks great. Way back in the 80s we never had MotU and Thundercats figures in the same scale, but now we do. Panthro stands ready to kick either Evil Warrior or Mutant ass, take your pick.

Remarks: Let’s face it, Thundercats is basically Masters of the Universe, just with cats. Not just because both feature magical swords and dead-looking bad guys. Even the main casts of characters are pretty similar. Panthro is the big guy who builds the big weapons and serves as voice of wisdom to the main hero, just like Man-at-Arms. So giving him a Man-at-Arms-themed armor for the crossover does make a lot of sense.

Now whether you like the recent deluge of crossovers or not, the MotU X Thundercats figures are a pretty cool idea. Two very compatible toy lines, very nicely executed, and finally in the same scale. Not sure how attractive the whole thing is to someone who didn’t watch both cartoons back in the 80s, but me? I love it. Fully recommended!
