Pilot & Mask: Matt Trakker with Spectrum Mask
Year: 1985
Review: Despite the fact that the Rhino vehicle featured in the M.A.S.K. logo (along with Matt Trakker's Ultraflash mask), it was the Thunderhawk, piloted by Matt wearing the Spectrum Mask, that was truly the cornerstone of the cartoon and the toyline as well. After all, a red Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with gull-wing doors that flies? I am trying to think of something more 80s than that, but I can't.
The Thunderhawk vehicle is a realistic looking Camaro in "normal mode" and opens up its wing doors, extends wings, and moves up the rear spoiler to reveal jet engines for flight mode. Underneath the car there is room for two stun bombs, which can be dropped by a pull trigger button. Now, I am not quite 100% sure, but I am reasonably certain that the German release omitted the two bombs, either because it made the vehicle to militaristic or due to the chocking hazard, who knows?
Thunderhawk comes with pilot figure Matt Trakker in his grey flight suit and the Spectrum mask. The figure shown in the pictures is the second release, where the mask got an additional chest piece to become larger and be less of a choking hazard. The far rarer first release is just the mask without a chest piece. Thunderhawk features working seat belts to strap in Matt and a co-pilot, too.
A truly iconic vehicle, probably the most-featured one in the cartoon, and just an all-time classic.
