Autobot weapon specialist and old-fashioned warrior, Ironhide is the big stick that backs up the soft steps of Optimus Prime. Paint scarred and chrome chipped by shrapnel from hundreds of battles, he is the oldest of the Autobots. His right hip is a mass of bypasses and temporary solutions, his power core and timing system are irregular, and his idle is set way too high; but his optics are the sharpest on Cybertron, and his cannon arm is as steady as ever. Optimus Prime relies on him for tactical advice and a cool head. As long as they keep making missiles compatible with his cannons, he'll keep fighting, until every last Decepticon is a smoldering wreck.
Robot Mode: Ironhide is the first figure that successfully manages to bring the feel of the Movie characters to the toys. An incredibly detailled and intricate robot mode, very posable, and looking completely bad-ass. The black-on-black colouring makes it hard at first glance to see all the details on this figure, but if you take a close-up look, you'll see them. Ironhide just looks fantastic in robot mode, no doubt about it. One little point of contention: According to the package, the halves of the vehicle hood should rest horizontally on his shoulders. First off, that doesn't work, at least not with my version, and second, it looks boring. On my Ironhide the hood halves stand up at a 45 degree angle and that, while certainly imparing Ironhide's vision, just looks cool. Ironhide carries two weapons that attach to his forearms and can be removed. Both can be loaded with the missiles he carries in one of them. So bottom line, a great Movie robot.
Vehicle Mode: An incredibly detailed and posable robot becomes a very smooth, plain vehicle mode. A black on black pick-up truck, Ironhide hides most of his detailing on the inside. The car mode looks pretty realistic, transparent windows and everything. If there is one thing that bothers me a bit is that the back of the pick-up is a solid block, no loading capacity, but that's just a minor thing. Ironhide carries his two weapons underneath the vehicle. They are pretty obvious, but if you remove them, you can see the robot arms, so it's better to leave them on. On the back you can see an Autobot symbol engraved into the rear. So all in all a very nice vehicle mode, no complaints.
Remarks: Ironhide might just be the best Movie figure I've had in hand yet. Okay, it's a close race with Leader-class Optimus Prime, but still. Ironhide is just awesome. Everything from the look, the detailing the posability, fits together perfectly. Ironhide also perfects the darker look of the Movie by being nearly all-black, yet you can still see lots and lots of details on him. If you buy just one Movie figure, Ironhide should be near the top of the list.
