Prelude: There is one thing a really cool collectors toy has to accomplish: it has to make a middle-aged adult feel like a kid again. And speaking for myself, few toys in recent memory have accomplished this better than the Hot Wheels Transformers figures, specifically Bone Shaker, who looks like he jumped right out of the 1990s and the Generation 2 line-up. So, let’s say go!

Robot Mode: Bone Shaker is a Deluxe-sized figure that kind of looks like it jumped out of a Mad Max movie. Lots of chrome pipes, flames, big wheels, and a big chromed skull on his chest. Not actual chrome paint, mind you, but it looks very nice. The entire figure looks like it might well be part die-cast, though it’s really all plastic.

The figure is very nicely articulated, entirely up to modern standards. The only thing missing would be twisting wrists, that would enable a few more poses with his mace weapon. Said mace is actually a Tesla coil with an Autobot symbol in front of crossbones on top of it. Which leads me to my one complaint about this figure: he really doesn’t look like an Autobot. One can only assume that Hot Wheels did not want bad guys as their cars.

Anyway, Bone Shaker is a great figure, both in terms of looks and articulation. And the fact that he looks like he should be at home in G2 is just a bonus on top. So no complaints about the robot mode, unless you care about hollow-looking legs when looking at him from the back. I don’t, so it’s two thumbs up from me.

Alternate Mode: Bone Shaker transforms into a pimped-out hot rod type vehicle, looking like something that irresponsible young men might race along abandoned highways in order to kill themselves in fiery fireballs. You have the grinning skull in front, the chromed exhaust popes on the side, the exposed engine on top, and the open cockpit with actual seats. The wheels have actual hubcaps, painted head- and taillights, and there is no trace of the robot mode to be found on the underbelly.

The only slightly weird thing is the place to store the mace / Tesla coil. It’s plugged into the driver’s cabin between the seats, sticking out like a huge antenna. One can imagine it as a lightning rod, supplying power to the rather insane vehicle. Very nice. There is a tiny Hot Wheels logo at the front of the hood, too, if you care about that. Bottom line: an awesome vehicle mode, very much reminiscent of the G2 Laser Rods. Hey, maybe that’s why he’s got the lightning rod, ha!

Remarks: Bone Shaker has zero media presence, being an entirely original character created for the Hot Wheels crossover line. As mentioned, though, he does look like that bot you dimly remember from Generation 2, possibly someone who died in the final battle against the Swarm.

So the bottom line here: a very nice figure, I love the look, and I would love to see more original characters created out of weird Hot Wheels cars. The only real downside is that he’s rather expensive for what’s basically just a Deluxe-class figure. Otherwise, though: brilliant!
