During Cybertron's Golden Age of peace, an elite few served as the guardians of Cybertron's accumulated knowledge. Among these data clerks was Optronix. A low-level operator who sought to replace those above him, Optronix turned his research skills to finding methods of manipulation. Eventually he rose to prominence; however, when his activities were uncovered, he was removed from service and left purposeless. Deep in his Ember, though, Optronix believed he was best fit to lead Cybertron. He hungered for power and through his studies he determined that military might was the only way to achieve his goals. Preaching a philosophy of destruction and conquest, he eventually began re-engineering his body as well as taking on a new name: Optimus Prime. He then began refashioning the bodies of his followers into weapons as well. Armed with weapons and a uniting philosophy, he declared his warriors autonomous from the rest of Cybertron and thus named them the Autobots.
Remarks: Optimus Prime here is a repaint of Classics Optimus Prime, so see the full review there. Just a few words on the differences. Optimus' paint job surprised me a bit. When you think "Evil Optimus" you inevitably think of a black-painted robot. Too many versions of Nemesis Prime / Black Convoy / Scourge have left their mark, I guess. This Optimus here is not black, though, he's a dark purple and gunmetal grey and it looks awesome on him. Added to that are some small details like the crack in his windshield and the slightly altered Autobot battle cry "Till all are Gone!" written on his gun / sleeper cap. So all in all, a truly awesome look.
In the Shattered Glass world, it was Optimus Prime who started the civil war on Cybertron and Megatron rose up to oppose him. The Botcon comic book gave some more details, such as the fact that Optimus discovered something extraordinary that tore his sanity apart, leaving him a sociopathic madman, but still a genius. Seeing him in his twisted throne room, where he pretended to take advice from the shattered remains of his enemies, which were strung up as trophies, sent a chill up my spine. The toy version takes one of the best Optimus Prime molds of all time and gives it a very nice twist, turning it into what might be the scariest and best evil Optimus of them all. A definite recommendation.
