As if torn from the pages of earth's prehistoric past, a vicious velociraptor breathes again! But Dinobot is no ordinary 'raptor, he's a robot in disguise battling beside his heroic teammates, the Maximals! Armed with a spinning cyber-slash tail weapon and always hungry for battle, Optimus Primal considers him a natural combat expert who has clawed his way to the top one victory after another!

Robot Mode: Dinobot looks a lot stockier in robot mode than he actually is, thanks to the huge lizard head on his chest. This makes him a bit disproportionate, but the rest of his body is pretty slim and quite posable. Like most early Beast Wars toys he has a 'mutant head', basically a helmet that splits into two halves and gets in the way all the time. I've since snapped it off, it doesn't do anything for the figure. Dinobot comes with two weapons: A sword than can be stored inside his lizard tail, and the tail itself, which splits into a kind of slasher-rotor. The weapons are strange, but show-accurate, so no complaints here. Overall a pretty decent robot mode (once you dispense with the mutant head) that just suffers a bit from the big lizard head on the chest. As a fun gimmick, though, you can flip up the lizard head and transform Dinobot into an upright-walking lizard man like from an old-style SF series.

Beast Mode: Dinobot transforms into a velociraptor. To get the most obvious complaint out of the way: His legs from the robot mode form the chest of the raptor and they do a lousy job. The feet stick out like... feet, really. You can't really imagine they are anything else. This is in stark contrast to the rest of the beast mode, which is really well done. Everything from the detailing to the sculpt looks really well, but the thing with the legs and feet... it hurts the beast mode considerably.

Remarks: Dinobot was one of the most interesting characters in the Beast Wars TV series. A former Predacon who defected to the Maximals, but was constantly torn between his duty and his sense of honour. In the end he sacrificed himself to stop Megatron and preserve the future of mankind, making for one of the most heartwrenching episodes of Transformers ever. As a figure Dinobot has some problems that drag him down, but he is still good and besides, you gotta have him for his role in the TV show. Recommended to all Beast Wars fans.
